Binance Hackers Laundered About $242M via Tron, Analyst Says

About $242 million of the funds stolen from Binance was laundered on the Tron blockchain over two days by North Korean hackers, according to SomaXBT, an onchain analyst who contributes to the Security Alliance (SEAL), in a post on X reported by The Block on 1 November (US time). According to the analyst, about $140 million of that left Tron through four cross-chain bridges and swap services: Relay ($48 million), THORChain ($44 million), Chainflip ($32.1 million) and Symbiosis ($16 million).

THORChain trading was halted on 10 of its 13 connected chains, including Tron, Ethereum and Bitcoin, as of 01:20 Vientiane time on 2 November (1:20 p.m. US Eastern time on 1 November), according to THORChain node data cited by The Block. Chainalysis said the pause was triggered by an Ethereum reorg that caused THORChain to double-refund a deposit. THORChain technical co-founder Chad Barraford did not say whether node operators would block the addresses listed by the FBI. Symbiosis said some of its screening mechanisms “have gaps” and that it is closing them.

Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic said it has verified $2.85 billion of the stolen funds as frozen or seized, about 44% of the $6.43 billion it counts as stolen, and that 94% of the frozen amount is stablecoins. About $3.25 billion, including 18,327 BTC and 233 million XRP, is held in assets that no issuer can freeze, Elliptic said. Binance itself has estimated the impact at about $6.3 billion. Chainalysis said the hackers have also deposited stablecoins into DeFi lending protocols on Tron in exchange for receipt tokens, which cannot be frozen, and later redeemed them from new addresses.
