China’s Communist Party Vows Crackdown on Crypto-Linked Corruption
China’s ruling Communist Party will crack down on corruption carried out through the internet, virtual currencies, cross-border funds and blockchain, according to a decision adopted on 29 October at the fifth plenary session of the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee. State news agency Xinhua released the full text on 1 November, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.
The decision calls for thorough investigation of new and hidden forms of corruption, such as agreed nominee shareholdings, “white gloves” middlemen and the revolving door between government and business, according to PANews, citing Xinhua. It also proposes deepening a digital discipline-inspection and supervision system, building a big-data platform to supervise public power, and stepping up work on cross-border corruption cases.
The SCMP reported that the document also steps up “party building” across China’s tech sector. Neither report describes new rules on crypto trading.
Cryptocurrency is not money and is not a lawful means of payment in the Lao PDR (Bank of the Lao PDR Notice No. 156/ຫກ, 11 August 2021).
