North Korea has rejected the FBI’s finding that it was behind the Binance hack. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, called the accusation a “grave political provocation” and “absurd rhetoric” in a statement carried by state media, CNBC and the BBC reported on 3 November. The FBI, the US Secret Service and blockchain analysts have linked the attack to the state-backed group TraderTraitor, also known as Lazarus Group, the BBC reported. North Korea has denied similar accusations in the past.

In a report published on Monday, 2 November, blockchain analytics firm Elliptic said the hackers relied on about 12,000 wallets on 11 blockchains and carried out over 40,000 transactions in the four days that followed the attack, which works out to a fresh wallet every 25 seconds on average, CNBC reported. Much of the early activity was on Tron, where funds were spread across about 7,700 addresses before at least $147 million was bridged out, mainly to Ethereum. Elliptic said about $786 million in stablecoins was swapped into assets their issuers cannot freeze, such as ether, before issuers including Tether and Circle froze the rest.

Elliptic counts the theft at $6.43 billion, while Binance has put it at about $6.3 billion. According to Elliptic, about $2.85 billion, or 44% of its total, has been frozen or seized, and about $3.24 billion remains in addresses linked to the theft, mostly in bitcoin and ether. Elliptic also saw the first signs of bitcoin mixing, about 28 BTC through 18 mixing transactions as of early Monday, and said only a negligible amount appears to have been cashed out. Separately, Chainalysis said North Korea-linked actors had begun moving funds onto Solana after more than $500 million passed through intermediary wallets on Tron.

Elliptic said the laundering has been slower than after the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, when all of the stolen ether was moved within 10 days. Elliptic expects what is left to be swapped into bitcoin bit by bit, and some of it may be turned into cash via OTC brokers and exchanges, a process it said could stretch over several months, CNBC reported.
