Swiss Fintech Safirum Launches CHF-S Franc Stablecoin on Solana
Zug-based fintech Safirum launched its Swiss franc stablecoin, CHF-S, on the Solana blockchain on Tuesday, 3 November, at an event in Zurich, finews reported. According to finews, it is the first stablecoin open to the public to be built under the stablecoin guidance of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA).
According to finews, FINMA allows stablecoins in one of two ways: with a bank guarantee, or by restricting holders to wallets that are whitelisted under anti-money-laundering rules. CHF-S uses the second approach, and Safirum has joined the self-regulatory organisation VQF for this purpose. Hans Kuhn, a former chief lawyer of the Swiss National Bank who advises Safirum, said the stablecoin relies on a banking-law exemption under which deposits from qualified investors with professional treasury operations are not treated as public deposits, so only institutional investors can mint it. Securities house Maverix is the first minter.
Safirum’s accounts at Berner Kantonalbank and Banque Richelieu hold the full 100% backing for CHF-S, with wallet holders paying in the matching amount at 1:1, finews reported, and the press release says more custodian banks will be added. finews reported that the first 10,000 francs of CHF-S were said to have been issued on 2 November. Uses named at the launch included cross-border payments between companies, treasury management, settlement on crypto exchanges and payments linked to tokenised assets.
