Kraken Restricts Accounts Linked to Suspected $133M EU Theft
Accounts connected to the suspected theft of more than $133 million in crypto from a European Union organisation that has not been named have been restricted by Kraken, which is cooperating with law enforcement, Cointelegraph reported on 3 November. “This incident did not originate on the Kraken platform,” Kraken said, adding that it is investigating reports that some of the assets were later moved through accounts on its platform. Kraken said its security systems were not compromised, no customer accounts were taken over and there is no ongoing risk to its customers.
On-chain investigator ZachXBT raised his estimate of the suspected losses to more than $133 million on 3 November, from $106 million the day before, after finding another $27 million in withdrawals from centralised exchanges, according to Cointelegraph. According to data firm Bitquery, the funds believed stolen were taken out through accounts at Kraken, Crypto.com and OKX, and $62.98 million worth of stablecoins was swapped for 27,553 ETH in roughly four hours.
Crypto.com said it had taken action to block funds associated with the incident from moving through its platform, and OKX said it was looking into the matter, Cointelegraph reported. As of 13:47 UTC on 2 November (20:47 Vientiane time), about $78.3 million remained in wallets linked to the suspected attacker and $30.5 million had moved out of the tracked addresses, according to Bitquery; Tether had frozen $1.1 million in USDT. ZachXBT said his working theory is that a large Western European financial institution was exploited and the incident is being covered up. The victim’s identity and the cover-up claim remain unverified.
