FBI Says North Korea’s TraderTraitor Was Behind the Binance Hack
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Saturday, 31 October (US time), that North Korea’s TraderTraitor hacking group was behind last week’s theft from Binance, CoinDesk reported. In a statement issued with the US Secret Service (USSS) and IRS Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), the FBI said the hackers had been converting the stolen funds mainly into ether, and it expects them to keep using swap services and other decentralized finance (DeFi) tools to launder the money. TraderTraitor is a subunit of the Lazarus Group, according to CoinDesk.
The agencies urged THORChain node operators, RPC node operators, instant exchanges, DeFi services, blockchain analytics firms and other virtual asset service providers to block transactions with, or derived from, the addresses the group is using. The FBI listed 608 Ethereum addresses, 19 bitcoin addresses and one Solana address, and no Tron addresses, according to The Block. The Block also reported that the FBI’s alert did not disclose the evidence behind its attribution, although analytics firms Chainalysis, Elliptic and TRM Labs had already linked the theft to North Korea.
Chainalysis CEO Jonathan Levin said the attackers have already used “thousands of addresses” and that he expects this to become tens of thousands in the coming weeks as the money moves through a wider laundering network, CoinDesk reported. The FBI also blamed TraderTraitor for the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, according to The Block.
