Brazilian crypto exchange Mercado Bitcoin kept its platform paused on Tuesday, 3 November, after a security incident it identified on 2 November. In an update on X on 3 November, the exchange said the affected assets total the equivalent of $36.3 million “at this moment” and that $12.9 million has been blocked so far, according to CoinMarketCap and The Crypto Times. Mercado Bitcoin repeated that customers will not lose assets and that their balances remain recorded in their accounts.

In an earlier help-centre update, posted at 21:00 Brasília time on 2 November (07:00 Vientiane time on 3 November), Mercado Bitcoin said the incident hit only its hot wallets, the online wallets it uses for day-to-day deposits and withdrawals, while most assets are kept in offline cold wallets. In that update it said about $11 million had been blocked with support from Tether, Circle, BRL1, Paxos and Chainalysis, and that about $38 million had not yet been blocked. Separately, Chainalysis estimated in a blog post that the attacker drained about $49 million across 17 blockchains, CoinMarketCap reported.

Mercado Bitcoin said the app stays offline until it is sure resuming is safe, and that it plans to restore services gradually as each function passes security checks, announcing each step in advance. It has not given a reopening date. CoinDesk reported that no one has been blamed for the attack and that there is no public evidence linking it to the Binance hack. The exchange also warned that it never asks for passwords, verification codes or recovery phrases, and does not offer refunds through links, WhatsApp or phone calls.
