Binance Says $6.3B Hack Began With a Fake Job Interview

Binance said on Tuesday, 3 November, that last week’s hack, which it has put at about $6.3 billion, began with a fake job interview. “It was a campaign, built over many months,” co-CEO Richard Teng told reporters at a media briefing, CoinDesk reported. Teng said the FBI has attributed the attack to North Korea; CNBC noted that Teng himself did not make that attribution.

According to Binance’s security report, described by CNBC and The Hacker News, the first step came in June 2026, when a Wallet DevOps engineer installed a tampered Homebrew installer while trying to install a popular AI coding tool he had found through a search engine. Binance said it detected this, replaced the device and rotated credentials, but that the engineer’s role and his wallet-team colleagues had been exposed to the attacker. In September, someone posing as a project director contacted another engineer through a legitimate job platform. After a video interview with a fake HR representative and a second interview with a supposed CEO, the engineer was told to download a coding “assignment” onto his work computer. It contained malware that evaded endpoint security, CoinDesk reported.

On 20 October, the attackers used that computer and an internal AI tool to reach two wallet engineers’ machines, Binance chief security officer Jimmy Su said, according to CoinDesk. On 29 October they used stolen credentials to deploy a container and run a malicious script, and funds began leaving at 20:05 UTC (03:05 Vientiane time on 30 October). Su said the attacker used an Ethereum feature called EIP-7702 to gain execution rights over a hot wallet, and that containment took until 00:10 UTC on 30 October (07:10 Vientiane time).

Teng said about $2.85 billion has been frozen and about 98% of the affected tokens have been replenished with company funds, adding that users won’t be affected, CoinDesk reported. On CNBC, Teng put the affected assets at $6.34 billion. Binance said it has rebuilt the affected wallet system and internal AI tool, replaced compromised devices and decommissioned the related credentials, and that independent experts will review the incident. It said it has blocked 57 suspected North Korea-linked attempts this year, using methods such as fake job interviews and malicious software disguised as popular developer tools.
