Bhutan Decree Turns Gelephu Office Into Central Bank Allowed to Hold Crypto
Bhutan Broadcasting Service reported that His Majesty the King signed a royal decree granting the Gelephu Financial Services Office full central-banking powers, paving its transition into the Gelephu Central Bank for Gelephu Mindfulness City. According to the news release summarised by BBS, the autonomous institution will handle monetary policy, foreign-reserve management, financial stability, payment and settlement systems and supervision of financial institutions in the zone.
BBS said the central bank will be empowered to invest in digital assets and cryptocurrencies alongside conventional reserve assets. The decree authorises that power; it does not oblige any purchase. A pathway for a city currency, including in digital form, would still need the King’s concurrence, according to the report. Bhutan’s Royal Monetary Authority remains the national central bank. More than 50 roles are being opened, including virtual-asset supervision and anti-money-laundering posts, BBS reported.
