Google Cloud Pitches Banks a Way to Split Crypto Keys Across Clouds

Google Cloud has showcased Google Multi-Party Compute, a key-signing service for banks that want to hold crypto, at its first digital-asset event, Unchained reported on 28 October. The idea is to split control of a private key across several parties, so that no single provider, Google included, holds the whole key.

In Google’s example, a bank might store key shares in three places: its own hardware, Google Cloud and another cloud provider. The parties work together to sign transactions without ever assembling the full key, and customers set the threshold, for example 2-of-3 or 5-of-7. A policy engine checks each transaction against rules such as spending caps and approved destinations, but Google’s documentation says its verdict is advisory and enough signers can override it.

The service is in private preview. Some banks, which Google did not name, are testing it, and Alphabet already uses it to secure its own ETH and SOL, Unchained reported. General availability is targeted for early 2027, and no pricing has been given. It enters a market where BitGo, Fordefi and Fireblocks already provide custody and transaction-approval tools to institutions.
