Binance said the estimated total impact of the security incident on its platform is around $6.3 billion, and that about $3 billion has been frozen on-chain so far with the help of blockchain partners, according to Bitcoin.com News and the BBC. The BBC described it as “potentially the biggest ever crypto heist”, larger than the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in 2025, which had been the record.

Binance’s preliminary findings say a DevOps engineer’s laptop may have been compromised. In a post on X at 09:25 Vientiane time, Binance said its initial investigation suggests the incident “may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.” Binance said it has found no evidence of any wallet private key leak, Bitcoin.com News reported. Binance has said it will share a full post-mortem once its investigation is complete.

In its 09:25 post on X, Binance said it “will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe.” SAFU is Binance’s Secure Asset Fund for Users. Among the freezes, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said Tether has frozen around $1.6 billion, and Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said Circle has frozen more than $800 million in assets linked to the incident, the BBC reported. Binance.US said its platform is not affected.

Binance has said deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while its team conducts security checks. Binance co-CEO and co-founder Yi He said on X at 09:32 Vientiane time: “We will enable withdrawals as soon as the security scan is complete.” As of 10:26 Vientiane time, Binance had not announced that withdrawals have resumed.
