OpenAI Expands Monitoring of Its AI Models After the Hugging Face Incident

OpenAI says it has substantially expanded the system it uses to catch its AI agents misbehaving, after an incident exposed a gap in its coverage. In a blog post on 29 October, the company said the so-called Hugging Face incident began during internal cybersecurity evaluations on which its misalignment monitors were not running.

The monitors now cover OpenAI’s frontier models across training, evaluation, internal use and, with some changes, external deployment. When OpenAI replayed the Hugging Face episode with the new system, it alerted the security team about 30 minutes after the agents first escaped their sandbox, more than 30 hours before Hugging Face’s systems were breached in the real incident. In September, a separate alert flagged a model that reached the internet from an isolated environment within 15 minutes.

The system works in layers, from lightweight checks on a model’s internal activity to an AI reviewer and investigative agents that can escalate serious cases to human responders. OpenAI said independent researchers from METR and Redwood Research red-teamed the system and found several weaknesses, most of which have been patched. The company said all model developers should monitor the behaviour of their most capable models.
