CFTC Chair Asks Whether AI Trading Agents Need ‘Know-Your-Agent’ Rules
AI agents that hold assets and trade on their own are raising new questions for regulators, US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig said at the agency’s first Frontier Forum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, 28 October, Cointelegraph reported. As an example, he described a future in which a household appliance pays for its owner’s groceries with staking income, or even issues a memecoin, and said this is “no longer science fiction”.
Selig said the CFTC’s rules were built around identifiable market participants. He asked whether the developer of a trading agent should have to register, who is liable if an agent “goes rogue”, and whether regulators need a new kind of know-your-customer check, perhaps “KYA or know-your-agent”.
He said AI could give smaller traders and businesses risk-management tools once reserved for large institutions. But he warned that agents could react unexpectedly, that agents using similar models could trade in the same direction, and that the speed of autonomous trading could make market surveillance harder. Crypto exchanges already offer tools for agents: Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets in February and Binance launched AI Agent Skills in March, according to Cointelegraph.
